Injection moulding machine with mould cooling in a plastics factory
Plastics & injection moulding cooling

Process cooling for plastics processing and injection moulding

Stable mould cooling for shorter cycle times, consistent dimensions and longer mould life. Sized on your complete machine park.

Why cooling matters here

Cooling determines a large part of your cycle time

In an injection moulding cycle, cooling time is often the longest step. Fluctuating water temperature causes varying shrinkage, warping and rejects. A stable supply temperature shortens the cycle and makes quality predictable.

We look at the whole machine park: coincidence, mould temperatures, hydraulic oil and cooling of the screw and feed throat. That avoids overcapacity and keeps energy use low, with free cooling in the cold months.

Our approach

Four building blocks for reliable mould cooling

Central chiller with buffer tank

A closed cooling ring at about 12/18 °C with a buffer tank absorbs peaks at start-up and during mould changes.

Temperature controllers per mould

Water or oil temperature controllers keep each mould at its own process temperature, independent of the central ring.

Free cooling for winter operation

With a dry cooler or free cooling module, the compressor stays largely off in the cold months, saving significantly on energy.

Redundancy and monitoring

Redundant pumps and zones per machine group mean servicing one machine does not stop production. Monitoring flags fouling and pressure drop early.

Complete delivery

Complete installation around your machine park

Process cooling for plastics is custom engineered and therefore quoted on request. We can deliver the full project, from calculation to certified handover.

Engineering per machine group

Calculation based on simultaneous demand, mould temperatures, flow and pressure loss, with a suitable hydraulic design.

Certified piping

Process water, glycol and refrigerant piping to applicable standards, including certified welding where required.

Assembly and connection

Placement of chillers, buffer tanks, pump groups, temperature controllers and dry coolers, including all connections.

Testing and commissioning

Pressure testing, flushing, filling, tuning and functional checks before handover to your technical team.

The project price depends on your machine park, capacity, temperature levels, pipe routes and required controls.

Applications

Where we apply this

Injection moulding

Mould cooling, hydraulic oil cooling and feed throat, central or per machine.

Extrusion and blow moulding

Cooling of calibration baths, rollers and blow moulds at constant temperature.

Thermoforming and recycling

Cooling of forming tables, granulate dryers and wash lines for plastics recycling.

Frequently asked questions

Injection moulding cooling, answers

How much cooling capacity does a moulding machine need?

As a rule of thumb, about 0.1 to 0.15 kW of cooling per kilogram of processed plastic per hour, depending on the material. We calculate per machine and on coincidence so you do not oversize.

What does a chiller for injection moulding cost?

That depends on the number of machines, required temperatures, simultaneous demand, piping and controls. After an assessment, you receive a custom quote for supply and, if required, complete installation.

Central cooling or one chiller per machine?

From about three machines, a central ring with temperature controllers per mould is usually more efficient and easier to maintain. For single machines or changing layouts, a chiller per machine can be more practical.

How does better cooling shorten cycle time?

A stable, well chosen supply temperature and sufficient flow through the mould channels shorten cooling time. In practice this often gives a few percent up to more than 10% shorter cycles.

Does free cooling make sense for injection moulding?

Yes. Because the ring runs at around 12 to 18 °C, outdoor air can take over cooling for much of the year. The compressor then stays largely off for 4 to 6 months.
